Susan Lin joined the University of California Linguistics Department in 2014, as an Assistant Professor in phonetics. Her research is largely focused on speech production and articulation, with an instrumental specialization in ultrasound imaging. The overall goal of this research is to better understand variation in speech production, especially the extent to which individual talkers are capable of drawing upon their experience as listeners. Her research extends to sound change, especially as it relates to speech production, as well as acquisition, particularly the challenges of learning to use speech organs while simultaneously undergoing rapid physiological and cognitive development.
