Sharon Goldwater is a Reader (≈ US Associate Professor) in the Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation at the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics.  She received her Ph.D. from Brown University in 2006 and spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University before moving to Edinburgh. Her research focuses on investigating the computational processes and constraints that are needed to learn linguistic structure, either in humans or in machines. In doing so, she develops novel unsupervised machine learning methods for automatic natural language processing and computer models of language acquisition in children. Her work covers many levels of linguistic structure, from phonetic categories to morphology, syntax, and semantics.
