Patrice Beddor
ProfessorPatrice Speeter Beddor is the John C. Catford Collegiate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. She shares with many phoneticians an interest in the cognitive representation and processing of speech in relation to the physical instantiation of speech. Many of her investigations study this relation from the perspective of coarticulation. Her recent, collaborative work focuses on the perceptual time course of coarticulation; ongoing work takes this research a step further by exploring possible links between a listener's dynamic use of coarticulatory information as the acoustic signal unfolds in real time and that language user's own coarticulated productions. This work is driven by an interest in integrative theoretical approaches to (i) speech perception and production and (ii) the phonetics of sound change.
