The CTA, Chicago Transit Authority, provides visitors and Chicagoans alike with options for commuting by subway and bus. If you want to explore Chicago, commute from a hotel downtown, or attend an event outside of Hyde Park, public transportation is a budget friendly way to do so.
Though the Subway has 8 lines in total, represented by color, likely the most useful for transportation from Hyde Park include the Red and Green line. Visitors may get a temporary pass at any station ($3) or a refillable card ($5 or more) if riding often. Each ride for the subway (and the bus) is $1.25 regardless of distance of your destination. The same pass, called a Ventra Card, may be used for the buses.
Like the subway, bus fare is $1.25 and bus lines are available for your transportation needs to explore Greater Chicago. You may use a Ventra Card, available at subway stations, to pay for bus fare or give exact change.
The University offers buses for easy commuting within the Hyde Park area. The University Transportation website also give details about parking options.
Metra trains are an excellent public transportation option for longer distance commutes, or to reach the Loop from Hyde Park (including Millenium Park). The Ventra Cards can not be used on the Metra. Instead you can purchase a ticket at any station.
