My 1969 Ph.D. in linguistics under Arnold Zwicky at the University of Illinois dealt with speech acts. That study and Grice comprised much of my publication until 1980, when I published a paper on noun-incorporation in Greenlandic in Language. At that time I had spent ten years studying the extraordinary and completely vital Inuit language of Greenland. I have been back numerous times and in fact, am writing this blurb in the shadow of Sermitsiaq, the beautiful mountain of Nuuk. By now I have spent 45 years studying and learning Kalaallisut and think I have some understanding of how it works. And it works in an extraordinary way; Speakers build words all the time that are as novel and non-lexical as our phrases, but are typical words in all other respects. The clear facts of this language challenge some of our most cherished prejudices concerning how human languages are put together.
